Ottery Tar Barrels — Bonfire Night on the Otter
Few sights along the Otter are as singular as the Tar Barrels: heavy oak casks soaked in tar, set alight in the early evening, and hoisted onto the shoulders of barrel-rollers who run them through the crowds in Ottery St Mary.
The custom is thought to date from the 17th century. Arrive in daylight for a wander around St Mary's Church and the Tumbling Weir, then find a spot near The Square as dusk settles. The Square bus stop (Stagecoach 9 / 9A / 382) is steps from the action; the Canaan Way car park fills quickly.
Dress for sparks and woodsmoke, and keep small children well back from the runs.
