Ottery Tar Barrels

Every 5 November, Ottery St Mary hosts its famous Tar Barrels tradition — heavy oak casks soaked in tar, set alight and hoisted onto the shoulders of barrel-rollers who run them through the crowds.

The custom is widely held to date from the 17th century. The town fills early; the Square bus stop (Stagecoach 9 / 9A / 382) is steps from the action and the Canaan Way car park usually fills quickly.

Dress for sparks and woodsmoke, keep small children well back from the runs, and check official event information before travelling — the schedule and arrangements can change year to year.
